Quick answer: Yes, water with a TDS reading of zero is safe for a healthy adult on a normal diet to drink. Distilled and reverse osmosis water are consumed every day without harm, and you get almost all of your calcium and magnesium from food, not water. The more useful answer is that the TDS number was never a safety score. Zero does not mean pure, 400 does not mean contaminated, and the meter cannot detect the contaminants people actually worry about.

What a TDS meter actually measures

TDS stands for total dissolved solids: the combined weight of minerals, salts and metals dissolved in water, reported in parts per million. A handheld meter does not identify any of them. It passes a small current through the water, measures electrical conductivity, and converts that into an estimated number.

Most of what that number represents is ordinary rock chemistry. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate and sulfate, picked up as groundwater moves through limestone and soil. The EPA treats TDS as a secondary standard with a guideline of 500 mg/L, and secondary standards are explicitly non-enforceable guidance about taste, color, staining and scale. They are, in the EPA's own framing, not health-based. That single fact undercuts most of what TDS meters are used to argue.

Is zero dissolved solids water safe to drink?

For a healthy person eating a normal diet, yes. Distilled water, reverse osmosis water and most bottled water labeled "purified" all sit at or near zero TDS, and they are consumed routinely without a problem. Dairy, leafy greens, nuts, legumes and whole grains supply the overwhelming majority of dietary calcium and magnesium. Water is a minor contributor in a typical Western diet.

Where the mineral question is genuinely real

There is a serious body of work behind the concern, and it is worth representing accurately. The World Health Organization convened experts in 2003 and published Nutrients in Drinking-water, which examined the long-term consumption of demineralised water. The context was largely desalination and public supply, situations where whole populations drink water that has had everything stripped out and where water can be a meaningful share of mineral intake. The recommendation that came out of it was to remineralise supply water, not a warning that a home filter will harm you.

The honest translation for a household: if your diet is short on calcium or magnesium, fix that with food. Do not rely on tap water to make up a nutritional gap, and do not panic about a low reading either.

Is zero TDS water bad for your kidneys?

For healthy kidneys, no. There is no good evidence that drinking demineralised water damages kidney structure, causes kidney failure or leads to urinary tract infections. Claims along those lines circulate widely online and are not supported.

What does put strain on the body is drinking a very large volume of any water in a short period, which can dilute blood sodium regardless of the mineral content of the water. That is a volume problem, not a TDS problem. If you have chronic kidney disease or are on a prescribed fluid or electrolyte plan, follow your clinician's guidance rather than a meter.

Taste, plumbing and the fair criticisms

Very low TDS water tastes flat to most people, which is a real reason to prefer mineral content in drinking water. Water with very low dissolved solids is also more aggressive toward metal plumbing, which is one of the reasons corrosivity sits alongside TDS in the EPA's secondary standards. In a home reverse osmosis setup these are minor considerations, but they are legitimate ones, and they are a better argument than the health scares.

Why a low TDS reading does not mean the water is safe

This is the part the meter gets most wrong. The contaminants that drive real health concern are present at parts per billion or parts per trillion, thousands of times too dilute to move a conductivity reading. Several of them carry no electrical charge at all, so a TDS meter could not register them even in principle.

  • PFAS. A 2023 US Geological Survey study estimated that at least one PFAS compound is present in roughly 45 percent of US tap water. None of it shows up on a TDS meter.
  • Lead. Regulated in the parts per billion. Invisible to a conductivity reading.
  • Pesticides, solvents and pharmaceuticals. Largely uncharged organic molecules at trace levels.
  • Bacteria, viruses, parasites and microplastics. Not dissolved at all, so they fall entirely outside what TDS describes.

Distilled water reads 0 ppm. So does water that has been contaminated with a volatile organic chemical after distillation. The meter cannot tell them apart.

Why a high TDS reading does not mean the water is unsafe

Hard water from a limestone aquifer can read 300 to 500 ppm and be perfectly good drinking water. Many celebrated European mineral waters read well above the EPA's 500 mg/L guideline and are sold precisely because of their mineral content. The practical downsides of high TDS are scale in kettles and water heaters, spotting on glassware, and a mineral taste. Those are nuisances, not hazards.

High TDS is occasionally worth investigating, for example a private well near road salt storage, a coastal well with seawater intrusion, or an area with mining influence. But the correct follow-up is a certified laboratory test that identifies what the dissolved solids actually are, not a bigger number on a pen.

The ZeroWater angle: when the meter is part of the marketing

ZeroWater ships a TDS meter with its pitchers and builds much of its marketing around getting a reading of 0.000. The reading is genuine. Those filters use ion exchange resin, which pulls dissolved ions out of the water, minerals included, so the number really does drop to zero.

Calling that a scam overstates it. The fair criticism is narrower and more useful: the meter is being presented as proof of safety when it is proof of demineralization. Two practical consequences follow. Ion exchange resin is consumed as it works, so in hard water areas the filter exhausts quickly and replacement costs climb. And a reading of zero still tells you nothing about PFAS, pesticides or microbes, because the meter was never measuring those.

Why your carbon filter barely changes the number

Customers ask this constantly: I filtered my water and the TDS reading hardly moved, is the filter broken? No. Activated carbon works by adsorption, holding chlorine and organic chemicals on its internal surface as water passes through. Calcium and magnesium are not organic chemicals and do not adsorb, so they pass through and the reading stays roughly where it started.

Only reverse osmosis and distillation strip minerals aggressively enough to collapse a TDS reading, and they do it by removing everything, useful or not. Good alternatives to judging water by a TDS reading

Three steps, in order, and none of them cost much:

  1. Read your Consumer Confidence Report. Every community water system publishes one annually listing what was detected and at what level. It tells you more than a meter ever will.
  2. Test your own tap for lead if your home predates the lead-free plumbing era. Lead usually enters after the treatment plant, so only a certified lab test at your faucet reflects what you are drinking.
  3. Match the filter to the results. Look for NSF/ANSI standards for the specific contaminants you care about, rather than a promise about a number on a screen.

The bottom line

Zero TDS water is safe to drink. It is also flat-tasting, and reaching zero means removing beneficial minerals along with everything else. Neither the zero nor a high reading tells you whether your water is safe, because a TDS meter measures dissolved mineral content and nothing more.
