Quick answer: Distilled water is one specific type of purified water, not a competing category. Distillation boils water into steam and condenses it back, leaving nearly everything behind. Purified water is the broader term: any water treated to a defined purity standard, whether by distillation, reverse osmosis, deionization, or a combination. So the useful question is not which is better, it is what you need it for. Machines that heat or evaporate water want distilled. What is distilled water?

Filtered water is a third thing
Filtered water is not the same as purified water and is not held to a purity number. A good filter targets what you want gone, such as lead, chlorine, PFAS, and microplastics, while leaving dissolved calcium and magnesium in place. For drinking water that is a feature rather than a shortcoming. Those minerals carry most of the flavor, and there is no health reason to strip them out of municipal tap water.

Both are safe to drink. The differences that actually matter day to day are taste and minerals.
Distilled water tastes flat. Water flavor comes largely from dissolved minerals and dissolved gases, and distillation removes both. Purified water made by RO tastes flat for the same reason, which is why many bottlers add a pinch of minerals back after treatment and put something like added minerals for taste on the label.
On the mineral question, be careful with what circulates online. A 2005 World Health Organization review of nutrients in drinking water noted that water contributes to calcium and magnesium intake and raised questions about long term use of fully demineralized water in populations where that contribution matters. That is not the same as the popular claim that distilled water leaches minerals out of your body. Which is better for drinking?
For everyday hydration, water with its minerals intact wins on taste, and filtered tap water gets you there for a fraction of the cost of anything bottled. Distilled makes sense for drinking only in narrow situations, usually on specific medical advice. Ignore anything framing distilled water as a detox: there is no mechanism behind that idea.

Use distilled. This is the clearest case in the whole comparison. A CPAP humidifier evaporates water and leaves whatever was dissolved in it behind in the chamber, where it builds up as scale, shortens the life of the machine, and gives bacteria more surface to cling to. Distilled water has essentially nothing to leave behind.
Purified water works here only if it is genuinely demineralized, and a bottle labeled purified may or may not be, depending on the process and whether minerals were added back for taste. Most CPAP manufacturers specify distilled water for exactly that reason. Tap water is the worst choice of the three.

The same logic applies to anything that boils or evaporates water and keeps the residue. Room humidifiers are the everyday example: the white dust that settles on furniture around an ultrasonic humidifier is mineral residue from the water, and distilled water eliminates it. Steam irons, autoclaves, and lead acid car batteries are all cases where distilled water is the standard recommendation.
Purified water is better than tap in these machines, but only if the purification actually removed the minerals. If it is remineralized RO water, you are back to scale and white dust.

Either can be safe, and the priority is water that is free from contamination rather than water that is free from minerals. Follow the preparation instructions on the formula, including any guidance about boiling and cooling water first.
One point worth raising with your pediatrician: distillation and most reverse osmosis systems remove fluoride. Depending on your water supply and your child, that may be exactly what you want or something your pediatrician would rather you avoid. It is a question for them, not for a label.

For most houseplants and garden beds, water with some minerals in it is fine and mildly preferable, since calcium and magnesium are nutrients plants use. Filtered tap water is usually the practical answer: it removes chlorine and chloramine, which some plants react to, without stripping everything else.
