Quick answer: A standard carbon water filter pitcher is not the right primary treatment for untested well water. Private wells are not regulated or monitored by anyone but you, and the highest-stakes well problems, bacteria and nitrate, are things most pitchers do not address at all. Test your well through a certified lab first, then match the treatment to what you find. A pitcher tested for microbiological reduction, like our Nano XP, can be a strong final barrier at the tap, but it should follow a test, not replace one.
How many Americans live on well water?
An estimated 13% of U.S. households, roughly 42 million Americans, rely on well water as their main water source. According to U.S. Geological Survey data, household wells are most concentrated in the Eastern United States: Florida, the Great Lakes region, North and South Carolina, and along the I-95 corridor from Maryland to New Hampshire, with large pockets in California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas.
Is well water safe to drink?
Often yes, but nobody is checking for you. The EPA's drinking water rules apply to public water systems, not private wells, so the homeowner is responsible for monitoring quality. Groundwater can pick up contaminants from the bedrock and soil it passes through, and runoff can carry pesticides, herbicides, nitrate from fertilizer and septic systems, and industrial pollutants into the aquifer. Wells can also be contaminated by bacteria from surface water intrusion, especially shallow wells and wells after flooding. Heavy metals, arsenic, and other naturally occurring contaminants show up in some regions too.
None of this means your well is unsafe. It means the only way to know is to test.
Test your well water before you buy any filter
This is the step most filter marketing skips, including, frankly, the older version of this article. Before spending money on treatment:
- Use a certified lab. Your state or county health department can point you to accredited labs, and many offer low-cost well testing programs. Basic panels typically cover coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, and total dissolved solids.
- Test at least annually, and again after flooding, nearby construction, work on the well, or any change in taste, odor, or appearance.
- Test for the risks in your area. Depending on your region that may mean arsenic, radon, uranium, PFAS, or agricultural chemicals. Your health department knows the local pattern.
If a test finds ongoing bacterial contamination or high nitrate, those are well problems, not pitcher problems. Bacteria calls for fixing or disinfecting the well (or continuous treatment like UV); nitrate calls for reverse osmosis, ion exchange, or distillation. No carbon pitcher, ours included, is the fix for high nitrate.
Can a water filter pitcher handle well water?
Most cannot, and it is worth being clear about why. Standard carbon filter pitchers, the familiar names like Brita and Pur, are designed to improve already treated municipal water: taste, odor, chlorine, and certain metals. That is a legitimate job, and they do it fine. But they are not rated to remove bacteria, viruses, or cysts like giardia and cryptosporidium, which is exactly the category of risk that makes untested well water different from city water. Using one as the primary safety barrier on an untested well gives you better-tasting water and a false sense of security.
